Giron Waterfall and the yungilla
Travel through the southern countryside with its contrasting climates and landscapes (from green colors to brown in less than 1 hour) The tour from Cuenca to the Yungilla Valley invites us to experience the combination of diverse landscapes and climates: green valleys, cloud forests, tropical woods, and deserts within short distances.
8:00 a.m. Hotel pick-up The trip starts in southern Cuenca, heading southeast where we observe the green valleys of Tarqui and its great extensions of fertile agricultural terrain. Continuing the tour we arrive in Girón, where we find two impressive waterfalls known as “El Chorro”, over 100 meters in height. The first is easily reached by way of an enjoyable 15-minute walk through damp mountain woods.
In the town of Girón we visit the Casa de los Tratados (House of Treaties), a historically significant museum for Ecuador, where agreements were reached to establish borders with the neighboring country of Peru.
We continue south and arrive at Yungilla, a beautiful green wooded valley. The climate now is warm, and leafy vegetation dominates, which makes this the preferred location for Cuencanos to rest and have fun on the weekends.
Along the way we find old sugar mills which reveal the importance of the production of sugar cane in the area, a tradition. Tasting of sugar cane, honey, brown sugar, and/or local fire water. Lunch in the area.
We continue our visit to the area of Jubones and as we descend, the temperature rises. We find ourselves in the desert in the Tumbesina zone, where dry forest predominates, filled with small brush and reptiles. It is a valuable ecosystem which houses various birds and plants. Return to hotel at approximately 4 p.m.
