Ecuador Inca Trail – 3 Days 2 Nights
Day 1
*The tour can begin from Alausí or Cuenca – Ends in Cuenca
We depart early from Cuenca and take the Pan-American Highway north. From La Moya we follow a small road and after 3.5 hours we arrive at Achupallas (3420 meters above sea level). A local guide meets us there with a pack horse. We start our hike along the Cadrul River and we cross a narrow pass between peaks named Callana Pucará and Mapahuiña. We continue upriver in this valley in a U shape, arriving at an Incan settlement (3910 meters), where we will camp. On the road we might climb Callana Pucará (4190 meters), which presents a fantastic panoramic view toward Chimborazo.
Hiking time: 5-6 hours.
Day 2
We follow the Cadrul River to the Tres Cruces (Three Crosses) Lake and climb to the Cuchilla Tres Cruces Pass (4420 meters) and cross the crest to Quillaloma. The ascent rewards us with a view of different mountain ranges and lakes. Below we make out the Espíndola Valley with the Qhapaqñan (Inca Trail), and in the background the sacred Culebrillas Lake. We descend toward the valley and the Espíndola River (3930 meters). We arrive in the area of Paredones or Tambo Real Incaico (Royal Inca Inn), located 500 meters from the right side of the lake (4012 meters). We set up camp.
Hiking time: 6 hours
Day 3
We head south and continue hiking through the typical vegetation of the moorland, still on the Inca Trail in the direction of Ingapirca. After 3 hours we arrive at the small town of San José. Participants have the option of walking 90 minutes more to get to the Ingapirca Complex or take a vehicle from San José for the 20-minute ride to Ingapirca (3160 meters). We will have lunch in a restaurant in the Ingapirca area. With our guide we will tour the most important pre-Hispanic archeological site in Ecuador. Deep in the southern Andes, we find cultural remains that are a testimony to the presence of important Andean societies like the Cañari and Inca.
Hiking time: 5 hours.
